In order to keep your HVAC system working properly, you need to make sure that your air filters are clean. How often you replace your air filter will depend on the type of filter that you have. If you are using disposable 3M air filters, you can simply replace them on a monthly basis. Permanent filters are made to last for years; however, in order for them to keep air flowing through your vents while filtering out pollutants, you need to clean them on a regular basis. A clogged and dirty electrostatic air filter is as bad as not having a filter at all.
Keeping a regular maintenance schedule is a great way to remind yourself when you are due to check and clean your permanent air filter. But there might be times when your air filter becomes exceptionally dirty or clogged and needs immediate attention. How can you tell if it’s time to clean your filter? Your Filter Connection has a few signs it’s time to clean or replace your filter:
Check Your Manual: Whether you buy Honeywell or 3M furnace filters, the packaging should tell you the expected life or maintenance schedule for your specific type of filter.
Smell the Air: If you notice a musty or dirty smell coming from your vents when you turn on your heater or air conditioner, it’s likely because your filter is dirty.
Listen for Your System: If your heating system is turning on more frequently than before, it’s a sign that it has to work harder than it should. This is a telltale sign that you might have a clogged filter that needs immediate cleaning or replacement.
